7 Not Quite A Shock

Despite her dad’s attempt to ruin the date by making her die of embarrassment, the date went very well after that.

They went to see a horror flick, they smuggled hot dogs into the theater and bought a giant tub popcorn, they wound up throwing most of the popcorn at each other, and they walked out of the building cracking up as they made fun of the characters, who had been way too stupid to live.

She had such a good time that when he said goodbye to her at the door, she spontaneously leaned over and kissed him.

He blinked as she pulled back. “I thought you told me you didn’t kiss on the first date.”

She smirked. “Only if I make the first move.”

At that point, the door flew open, and her father stood there with a gigantic scowl.

“Bye, Pablo!” Lucy said, ducking under her father’s arm to get in the house.

“See you at school on Monday!” he called.

Her father shut the door and folded his arms.

“It’s none of your beeswax who I kiss, Dad,” Lucy said.

“Didn’t you just meet him a few days ago?”

“Yeah. And I like him.”

“Don’t you have another date tomorrow?”

“Yep, and I like him, too.”

Her father glowered.

Lucy proceeded to spend the rest of the night ignoring her homework and putting sticky notes in her favorite pages of some fashion magazines she’d bought a few weeks ago. If she used sticky notes, she’d hopefully remember where to find the pages, and could take the magazines with her next time she went shopping. It was a genius plan.

Her older sister Lila called, freaking out because she’d only just checked her messages and gotten the news that Aunt Aggie had died and Lucy was cursed now.

Once Lucy assured her that things were fine, and no she had no clue what her magic power was, and yes she’d call her when she found out, the two of them wound up gabbing for hours about just about everything. It was amazing how well they got along now that they no longer lived in the same house.

“Just take care of yourself, Luce,” Lila said as they were about to hang up. “I want you to stay alive.”

“That’s not what you used to say,” Lucy said with a grin.

Lila snickered. “What can I say? College has matured me.”

By the time the call ended, it was well past her usual bedtime, so Lucy brushed her teeth and headed to bed. Her parents were already asleep and snoring. Since it wasn’t a school night and she’d been talking to Lila, they hadn’t put a limit on her phone time.

Lucy lay awake for a long time, wondering.

What was her power? Would it be something cool? She really hoped it wouldn’t have anything to do with spreadsheets.

She fell asleep and had unsettling dreams about color-coded math tests and her father throwing books at all of her dates.
